4536718After studying psychology and philosophy and working as a journalist, psychologist and teacher, Monique Schwarz worked for many years at the University of Melbourne as a senior lecturer in filmmaking, film theory and history, focusing on women’s films and Australian Film history.

During this period she was also active in independent film distribution, first being involved with the Melbourne Filmmakers Cooperative, and later with the feminist films distribution cooperative, Reel Women. She is represented in many books about women’s films, and features in a critically acclaimed film called Faces.

Schwarz’s films are highly regarded for their story-telling skill, strong research base and imaginative cinematic treatments. She has made short films, documentaries and narrative films since graduating film school, and these have enjoyed major critical and commercial acclaim. They have been screened at cinemas and on television in all major Australian cities and are included in major film collections both in Australia and internationally, and have been represented at many film festivals , including the Berlin Film Festival and the Jerusalem Film Festival. Schwarz’s work is also represented at Israel’s Holocaust Memorial Museum of Yad Vashem. Today she works as a writer/director/producer and since turning to digital filmmaking, has been the director of photography for her last two films. Most of Schwarz’s films deal with Jewish themes, and BEYOND PARANOIA, her most recent, is no exception.

Monique is the child of Holocaust survivors, was born in Switzerland, lived in Paris and then Australia and now lives in Jerusalem Israel.
She speaks French, German and English and is at present learning to speak Hebrew.

The film confronts the shocking realization that the current mood of anti Zionism and anti Israel hatred is nothing more than the age old anti Semitism an“ old wine in a new bottle”. April 2015

TREE OF LIFE: Reflections on Torah and Environment. DOCUMENTARY
The film features a group of Israeli environmentalists both religious and secular , men and women, who comment on the connection between the Torah and the Environment. It was produced together with Benzion Tidhar. 2012.

FORGOTTEN CHILDREN. DOCUMENTARY
A group of Israeli teachers bring an inspiring educational program to help develop literacy and numeracy in the aboriginal population in the remote areas of Australia. April 2009.

MAMADRAMA: The Jewish Mother in Cinema. DOCUMENTARY
Explores Yiddish, Hollywood, Silent and Israeli representation of Jewish mothers in Cinema. Toured extensively to Film Festivals all over the world including the Jerusalem International Film Festival. 2001

BITTER HERBS AND HONEY. DOCUMENTARY
A film about Eastern European arriving in Melbourne after World War Two, their struggles and successes adjusting to a new environment and their struggle to be accepted by the established Jewish community.

THE GULF BETWEEN. DOCUMENTARY
Six Israelis talk intimately about their experiences during the Gulf War juxtaposed with politicians speaking about the same event. An investigation of the public and private aspects of a common experience.

PIETA. DRAMA
A Catholic divorced female school teacher, finds her orderly life turned upside down when one of her pupils becomes a surrogate mother to a down syndrome baby. When the father disowns the child, the heroine seeks revenge.

PAUSES. DOCUMENTARY
Three elderly women, who have lost their husbands or partners recently, talk about the difficulties and pleasures of being alone and single. AFI award winner.

EINE FAMILIE BRAUN. DOCUMENTARY
The story of three generations of a migrant family in Australia, and the ongoing effect of the Holocaust on all the generations. Many film festivals including Berlin Film Festival.
